Focus on… Logistics

Logistics is a sector that has changed considerably in the last few years. Often mistakenly seen as a purely technical job, it plays a strategic planning role requiring understanding of all aspects of the supply chain together with softer skills, such as communication, for relationships with suppliers and customers.

Did you know?

  • Logistics is a key sector for the UK economy, contributing over £90 billion annually
  • Logistics employs 2.2 million individuals – 8% of the nation’s workforce
  • The sector is characterised by a high concentration of low level occupations (machine operatives and elementary roles account for 49% of the workforce), but there is forecasted demand for customer service workers, transport planners, maintenance engineers and IT professionals.

What areas of transport and logistics are there?

Passenger transport is a customer focused sector that includes aviation, community transport, rail and buses. It plays an important role by enabling the workforce and consumers to move around within the economy.

Passenger Transport

Logistics involves managing the movement of goods either by road, rail, air or sea. It also includes the storage and warehousing of the things we buy, as well as the transport of supplies which manufacturers need to make things. Logistics is an important part of the economy because it ensures the flow of the things we need throughout the whole country.
